The Drumming System, taught by professional drummer and instructor Mike Michalkow, is our second choice for drum instruction dvds. The main point that keeps this course out of the #1 spot is price. The Drumming System sells for $247 almost $100 more then Learn & Master Drums.

The video quality is still fantastic for this course with shots being filmed in 4-way multi angle. This allows you to see what the instructor is doing with his hands and feet at the same time.

Besides the DVDs the Drumming System also includes 5 workbooks for review and practice as well as 10 play along videos and audio tracks.

The play along videos include a drummer in the videos so you can practice playing along, then the jam along songs have the drum track taken out so you can play the drum part all on your own.

The course does a good job at covering the basics and introducing you to a multitude of styles form rock, jazz to latin drumming. By completing this drumming course you’ll be a very well rounded player.

One down fall that I’ve heard some people say is they feel Mike talks a bit too much at the beginning of each lesson providing too much explanation before he gets into his demonstration. This is a personal preference and when creating a drum instruction dvd kit you have to try and make it for a broad audience of beginner and intermediate players.

Over all this is a great product that you won’t be disappointed with, like I said it’s primarily price that makes it our #2 choice.

The Rock Drumming System is a baby brother to the full Drumming System course. While it’s taught by a different instructor, Jared Falk, it does include the great multi angle shots and zooms that the Drumming System has.

The reason this course ranks #3 is because of course content. Where Learn and Master Drums and the Drumming System cover a wide variety of styles Rock Drumming System only covers the basics and rock drumming patterns and fills.

This course comes with 3 drum instruction dvds which are each accompanied by a workbook. Like the other two courses we compared the workbooks are used for review and additional exercises while practicing.

To make practicing easier there are 10 songs on a play along DVD and CD. The DVD includes the drum tracks while the CD is the other instruments without the drums.

What I liked most about this set is it teaches you useable snippets of patterns and fills you can build on to create your own drum style when jamming with friends. While theory and technique is great, sometimes we just want to learn actionable stuff like patterns you can use now.
