This is the one course I reviewed that I would suggest not purchasing as a new beginner. While drum rudiments are the foundation of all great drumming there isn’t a ton of content in this course the brand new drummer just starting out.
Take a look at any of the other four courses reviewed and compared on the site if you have never played the drums before. While it does state on the Drum Rudiment System website “all of the videos are relevant for drummers of all skill levels.” I believe a brand new beginner will have more fun learning from one of the other courses.
If you are an intermediate drummer, or at least a beginner who has either take a previous course or some private lessons in the past then the Drum Rudiment System could be just the thing you need to speed up your playing, improve your technique and take you to the next level.
What Comes in the Box
The Drum Rudiment System comes with four spiral bound work books and six DVDs full of video lesson content.
There are three different sections to the course covering beginner, intermediate and advanced rudiments as well as a bonus workbook included that covers hybrid rudiments which you can learn after completing the advanced workbook and dvds.
Video Lessons
There is over 13 hours of video instruction from course author and instructor Lionel Duperron. Each lesson disc blends a mix of regular angle, close up and 4 way split screens to demonstrate each rudiment.
The videos closely follow the material and practice exercises outline in each work book so that you can watch the video demonstrations and explanations once then practice with your practice pad or kit using only the work book.
The video quality is top notch filmed in high definition. There’s no issue watching what is being taught and on screen graphics taken directly from the work books for each section help strengthen you’re understanding all the way.
Conclusion
The Drum Rudiment System, for the right student, is an absolutely awesome course. You must be serious about learning the drums to get the enjoyment out of learning these skills. Once your master all 40 rudiments and go through the hybrid rudiments workbook I have no doubt you will notice a huge improvement in your speed and creativity on the drums.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the Drum Rudiment System is so much a beginner drum course as it is a course to teach the intermediate drummer how to improve their skills and speed.
