Top 3 Video Drum Lessons Courses to Learn Drums at Home
When it comes to learning to play the drums we’re only as good as our teacher or the videos we use to learn from, and as private drum lessons continue to become more expensive many beginners are looking to video drum lessons as an alternative.
Drum lesson videos provide an easy to follow method to learn the drums at home, on your own time and for about 90% less then private instruction.
I created DrumLessonDVD.org to help you find the best video drum lessons course available online. In doing my comparisons I considered the topics covered, quality of instruction and the instructor, additional teaching materials, support and price.
Any one of the following three drum lesson video courses will teach you the drums at home. It just depends on your learning goals which course you should go with.
#1 Learn and Master Drums
The video quality in the Learn and Master Drum series is great. They provide multiple angle shots so you can see what the instructors doing on each drum/cymbal while he’s demonstrating which makes it easy for you to follow and copy.
While I know this is a video drum lesson comparison I can’t help but say how happy I was with the additional materials besides the DVDs with this course. The lesson book is well organized and illustrated. It’s a great learning tool all on it’s own.
The Jam Along discs are great for practicing and the sound is top notch. These tracks were definitely recorded at a high end studio in Nashville. You can’t fully understand how helpful these songs are to practice with until you’re using them.

Dan Shrill (click here to read his bio), the author and instructor of Learn & Master Drums, is an experience drummer and percussionist who does session work in Nashville TN and also teaches students of all skill levels. He’s done an excellent job transferring his one-on-one teaching style to the screen for these drum lesson videos.
Over all for beginners I believe this is the most well rounded course. It touches on a lot of different topics that will help you become a well rounded drummer. For the money ($149 for the whole course) Learn & Master Drums offers the most value.

#2 Drumming System
The Drumming System is a huge catalog of drum lesson videos spreading across 20 DVDS. This series of lessons covers all beginner topics as well as the basics to most major drumming styles including rock, jazz and latin.
All of the drum lesson videos take advantage of a 4-way split screen when the instructor, Mike …, is demonstrating a new skill. This helps with the illustration of proper technique and timing. Beginners will find this especially useful since timing and rhythm on the drums can take some time to pick up.
To complement the 20 DVDS there are also play along video audio tracks to use while practicing. The videos are of a full band playing through the jam songs supplied with the course then the audio cd tracks are the same songs without the drum tracks so you can play as the main drummer.
There are five workbooks that provide review and exercise for each video drum lesson in the course as well as an online forum to ask questions, get answers and feedback.
There are no major draw backs to the Drumming System course other then it’s price. The course sells for $247, that’s almost $100 more then the Learn & Master Drums course. While the Drumming System does provide more content I don’t believe that it’s a requirement for beginners.

#3 Rock Drumming System
As the baby brother course to the Drumming System, the Rock Drumming System is a great intro video drums lesson program. While the video lessons in this course focus more on Rock drumming styles the beginner topics are still very relevant if you’re just getting started.
There are three DVDs full of drum lesson videos divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced topics. Each DVD is accompanied with a workbook/lesson book you use to review the material taught as well as learn additional practice exercises.
The strongest part of the Rock Drumming System is the format they choose to teach you. There are a lot of patterns taught which are easy to remember and work into your own playing style. If you’re solely interested in rock drumming then hands down this is the video drum lessons course for you.
Like the Drumming System this course also uses 4-way split screen videos to show up close what the instructors hands and feet are doing on the toms, snare, high hat and kick drum.
There are also 10 songs included on a jam along DVD and CD for you to use while you’re practicing.
If you’re interested in learning to play rock songs and cover songs this is a great course to buy. How ever if you’re also interested in other styles as well as reading drum notation then you may want to consider Learn and Master Drums for about $50 more.
